Ergonomic Review

There have been plenty of ergonomic review studies that have proven the importance of sitting and standing with the proper posture while working and using products and furniture items meant for proper ergonomics. Even if you work at a desk all day, ergonomic studies show this is harder on the back and other parts of the body than you may realize. When seated, the spongy discs in between your vertebrae have pressure applied to them that may lead to pain or degeneration. There are ways to combat this damage, however.

Ball chairs help absorb shock and take pressure off the back. They also help keep the body in the proper keying position and allow you to do exercises right at your desk. Gaiam makes an excellent ball chair where the ball can be removed and used during your workout also. A kneeling chair is another innovation to consider. It features a place for your bottom and knee pads where your knees will rest. The position may seem awkward at first but it is designed for maximum safety and support. Even traditional office chairs come with ergonomic features like lumbar support.

Carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injuries are common office maladies according to ergonomic studies. These injuries can be avoided by exercising the hands and wrists before and after work. Taking breaks to flex the hands and stretch during work hours is a good idea also. The use of an ergonomic keyboard is recommended as these keyboards are made to be easy on the hands and wrists due to their slanted, elevated design. There are also ergonomic wrist pads and mouse pads. The best place to shop for ergonomic items are office supply stores although discount department stores and online vendors may also have what you're looking for.

Ergonomic review studies have also shown the importance of proper ergonomics in an industrial setting as well. Factory workers and assembly line workers should follow proper lifting techniques and when working with their hands follow the same frequent break guidelines as keyboard users. No matter what your daily work, there are ways to improve the ergonomics of your posture and environment. The payoffs of doing so include decreased risk of injury and greater comfort while working. Ergonomics are so important that even the United States CDC offers free information on the subject.
