Ergonomic Height
Anyone who sits at a desk for the majority of the workday should understand ergonomic height guidelines as well as other aspects of ergonomics. Ergonomic sitting is crucial to the health and comfort of the back, legs and feet. Not only does the seated position put pressure on the spongy discs between each vertebra, it also slows circulation through the legs and feet. Sitting in the right kind of chair adjusted in the right way can minimize strain and discomfort for office workers.
The first thing you'll need for the proper ergonomic position is an ergonomic chair. There are traditional style desk chairs as well as new kneeling chairs that look rather odd but provide superior support for the back and knees. Any chair you choose should provide lumbar support and be adjustable to meet your needs. Your desk chair should be adjusted to a height where your feet rest flat on the floor. If they don't, you may need to get a desk footrest. These footrests make it easier to stay in the proper position especially for shorter workers.
When adjusting the height of your chair your waist should be at the level of your keyboard. Arms should extend comfortably in front of you with shoulders in a relaxed position. It is important not to slouch in your chair, and when typing to keep your wrists straight and don't rest them on the wrist pad. Contrary to what many computer workers believe the wrist pad is for resting the wrists in between typing, not during. Also frequent breaks are crucial to total body wellness, so get up for five to ten minutes every hour and stretch or walk around.
By making simple ergonomic height adjustments to your desk chair, sitting with good posture and stretching regularly, you can avoid work related strain. As anyone who has suffered from desk chair related back pain or carpal tunnel pain will tell you, prevention is the best medicine. By learning as much as you can about ergonomics and following the guidelines, you can work more safely and comfortably at your computer. This issue is so important for health that the CDC has even released guidelines and information for workers to follow.
