Ergonomic Checklist
If there is a requirement to make your work area more productively user friendly, an ergonomic checklist can spark off some improvements. While nothing can replace ergonomic furniture and proper posture, a checklist can remind you and anyone else who works in your office to check their positioning and make sure they have everything they need for a safe and comfortable workday. While you can print checklists from the Internet, it may be even better to devise your own that meets the needs of your office.
On your checklist you may want to include information about items such as mouse pads, wrist pads, keyboards, back supports and chairs. For example, at stores like Staples and Office Depot you can buy ergonomic mouse and wrist pads, keyboards and much more. Employees should make sure their desk is ergonomically correct and ready to use before they start working. This should only require a brief review each morning before the beginning of the workday. Everything you need for an ergonomic work area can be purchased at the stores mentioned above or even on the Internet.
Posture is an important element to add on your ergonomic list. For example, workers should check to make sure they are positioned correctly in the chair and at the desk. Feet should be flat on the floor, back straight, shoulders dropped in a relaxed position. The keyboard should be at approximately the same height as the waist and wrists should be held straight. Do not rest the wrists on the wrist pad while typing, only in between. Also it is a good idea to stretch and exercise the hands and wrists prior to typing. These are basic rules that can be included on a checklist.
In addition to an ergonomic checklist, you may want to conduct a training session that goes over the basics of ergonomics. Frequent breaks are also important for health and wellness. For every hour that you work at a computer, there should be a five to ten minute stretch break. Getting up from the desk and walking around can help increase circulation and aid comfort throughout the workday. If you are unable to leave your desk area, consider adding some desk exercises to the checklist that can be done either seated or standing at your desk.
